What is a Meta Tag in SEO?

SEO is a process we all go through to encourage search engines to rank pages higher in search results.

What is a Meta Tag?

A meta tag is a short snippet of webpage text which describes your website’s content.

They are not visible on content, but can be found in the source code.

People who use blogs may be aware of tags, meta tags are somewhat similar to it, a small introduction about your content helps search engines know what a webpage is about.

Do meta tags exists?

Meta tags only exists in HTML form, you can find it in the “head” section of the HTML code, so it’s only visible to search engine bots.

What does “meta” stands for in meta tags?

“Meta” stands for “Metadata” which is data about the information on your website’s page.

Types of Meta Tags

There are four major types of metadata considering SEO, they include:

  • Title tag
  • Meta description
  • Meta keywords
  • Meta robots

Let’s discuss these in more detail.

Title Tag

It contains the information about your content. It should be about 65 characters long. As you could not find more than this limit in Search engines results.

Note very well that a title tag appears in the top of the browser.

Meta Description

It’s very important and useful meta tag to describe your content.

It lets search engines know about the data on your webpage. It should be limited up to 160 characters.

Meta Keywords

Meta keywords includes the keywords which suits your content.

However, these are no more useful now.

Back in the days, these were useful and helped websites to rank into SERPs.

Meta Robots

This says the search engines what to do with your page, whether to index it or not.

That is “index/noindex” and whether to follow the links on the page or not with the text “follow/nofollow”.

These tags are very important elements of SEO and do help in search engine rankings.

Why are meta tags important?

They don’t appear on the page itself, but only in the source code.

We all know tags from blog culture, and meta tags are more or less the same thing, little content descriptors that help tell search engines know what a web page is all about.

Meta tags are HTML elements that gives information about a web page for search engines and website visitors.

These elements must be placed as tags in thesection of an HTML document so therefore need to be coded in your CMS.

For google, adding the description meta tag does not result in a boost in the search engine results pages (SERPs), but the description might be used for the description for your SERP listings in google.

There are two important meta tags:

  • Meta keyword tags

Meta Tags Description Tips

  • Use keywords in your meta description tag.
  • There should not be more than 160 characters in a description metatag of a single web page.
  • Use a different meta description tag for each page, as each page is different and stands a better chance of being found if you place a good title and description on it.

Meta Keywords Tag Tips

  • Use synonyms
  • Use unique keywords
  • No need to repeat any given phrase

Note: You can repeat a word a couple of times, as long as each time it is part of a different phrase.
