TFA factors can be split into three categories:

  • Knowledge factors –This is the most common kind of authentication, examples range from passwords to secret questions. Passwords are easily forgotten and can be weak if not enforced properly.
  • Possessive factors – Instead of having to remember something, possessive factors uses something the user has, just like a key to a lock. These can vary from smart cards which generate codes to USB tokens. Similarly to knowledge factors, possessive factors can be lost.
  • Inherence factors – Inherence factors uses fingerprints, retinal scans, dynamic signature as a matching pattern. These are harder to spoof as they are unique to every person, however they are harder to use and implement in older technology.

There are a multitude of ways that TFA, can work with numerous of combinations available. The first normally being a password, either created by the user or assigned to them upon account creation.

Passwords will typically need to be remembered and this is where security fails most often, users tend to create easily memorable passwords and use the same password for several of their accounts, when one becomes compromised attackers can then perform malicious activities without the authorization of the account owner.

This is where TFA comes into play by adding an extra layer, typically in the form of a physical token, such as biometrics, or an OTP generated at the time of the logon request.

If an attacker managed to get hold of the user’s password, they would also need to get the user’s current OTP to login which changes at a particular rate making it hard for attackers to succeed in infiltrating an account.

What is Two-Factor Authentication?

With two-factor authentication, users are granted access to an application based on a something they know, and something they have.

The most familiar implementation of two-factor authentication is probably a bank’s ATM system.

The “something users have” for example is an ATM card.

The “something users know” is a PIN.

However, ATM systems are limited because they require use of a physical ATM machine that can read a user’s card.

Another example of two-factor authentication is the use of a dedicated device.

When logging on to a protected application, users will be prompted both for their password and a token provided by their dedicated device.

Dedicated devices generate tokens by using a cryptographic hash function to combine a secret key with the current time.

The secret key is shared between the dedicated device and the server that is granting access to the application, so the server will be able to verify the token.

Types Of Authentication

There are two types of authentications, the first one is SMS-based and the other is a Time-Based One-Time password (TOTP).

Let’s break them down.

Two-Factor Authentication: TOTP Versus SMS Based

We are looking at the differences between these authentication methods and finally judge which one is most suitable and convenient for the user.

SMS-Based Authentication

When using SMS-based two-factor authentication, a text message containing the token is sent to a user’s smart device.

The benefit of this approach is that it is relatively easy for users to be added to the system, users provide a phone number or email address where text messages can be sent for verification.

The drawback to SMS-based TFA is that it requires users to have a phone signal to help the authentication process to work.

In places where there is no phone signal, users will be unable to access the protected application.

Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP)

An increasingly popular approach to implementing TFA is to use a Time-Based One-Time Password.

A TOTP is an example of a hash-based message authentication code, and is the software-based equivalent of using a dedicated device.

With the TOTP approach, a unique secret key is shared between the application server and an app running on a user’s smart device.

When the user logs on, the app uses that key and the time to generate a token.

Because the secret key is shared by both the application server and the user’s smart device, the same token will be generated.

The advantage of using a TOTP is that users don’t need a phone signal to authenticate themselves to the application.

The disadvantage is that the secret key must be downloaded to an app running on the user’s phone, which can make provisioning a challenge.

So now that we know and have a fair idea about the SMS-based and TOTP authentication can we confidently say that both methods are reliable and safe?.

For all desktop users follow these steps to set up your facebook code generator:

  • Login to facebook with your username and password.
  • Now, click on the drop down arrow located top right corner of the menu, and select settings.
  • On the left navigation, tap on security and login.

It is important to create a backup if the unexpected happens, in case your device is stolen or faulty, using recovery codes is the best way to go.

If your security method isn’t available then use recovery codes to receive a verification code.
